YMCA Youth Activities: Education, Sport & Adventure
Young Health Champions- Funded by Department of Health
This three year project has received funding from the Department of Health. Work began in September 2011 with the aim to reduce health inequalities among young people living in areas of disadvantage by using young volunteers as peer leaders. These Young Health Champions will provide support and leadership to hard-to-reach young people so they engage more effectively with local health and social care provision, and thus lead healthier lifestyles.
The project also aims to enable local health and social care services to be more effective at engaging young people. The Young Health Champions will act as ‘young consultants’ to local health commissioners and service providers to help ensure their services are more effective at engaging and meeting the health needs of young people. Alongside this they will also inspire young people to be more involved in the development and delivery of local health and social care services.
The project aims to provide a model for engaging young people in health based activity that can be utilised across the third sector. The model is being managed centrally through YMCA England; and being delivered on the ground through Plymouth YMCA and four additional YMCAs around England.
Plymouth YMCA is now recruiting young volunteers between the ages of 16-24 to undertake the roles of Young Health Champions. These volunteers will recieve training from the YMCA and the local health authority; and will be supported locally by Plymouth YMCA.
This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to further a career in the health and social care field as volunteering on the project will:
- Provide a wealth of recognised training
- Open up a wide network of professional contacts locally and nationally
- Create opportunity to influence local health and social care services
- Give insight to the transformation of the public health sector
- Offer direct health and social care work experience.

Holiday Club
"My son can't get out of bed for anything, but when it comes to the Holiday Club he is up and ready to leave before me. He just can't wait to get here." Mrs Carter
Whether you are looking for educational opportunities, sport or adventure we are sure you’ll find challenges, fun and excitement for young people at Plymouth YMCA.
Our Youth Department engages young people across Plymouth between 8 and 16 years of age in sport, educational projects and experiential learning opportunities. Many of our youth programmes are run in collaboration with local schools and partners: for example our PM Club, an after-school activity scheme for young people attending Penny Cross and Montpelier Primary Schools.
We also work in partnership with Plymouth City Council’s Youth Service to provide activities for young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), with the aim of improving life skills.
During the school breaks we operate Holiday Club, which has an expanded schedule of programming for the summer break. Holiday Club is an inclusive scheme for young people 8 – 16 years of age, and organises activities such as go-karting, street surfing, arts & crafts, climbing, sports, and trips to adventure parks.
Our staff are enhanced CRB checked, have all had child protection training and hold relevant national body qualifications. There is always an on- site first aid officer available.
Holiday Club is very popular and spaces are limited on each day of the schedule. We advise that you book early to avoid disappointment.
